Quriiri supports the John Nurminen Foundation

22.12.2021

This Christmas, we are joining the Baltic Sea Rescue Team and supporting the John Nurminen Foundation with our Christmas donation, which carries out effective and concrete actions to protect the Baltic Sea. The Baltic Sea is threatened by many problems:

? Eutrophication is the biggest and most visible environmental problem in the Baltic Sea. Although eutrophying nutrient discharges have been halved since the 1980s, visible signs of eutrophication such as mass blooms of blue-green algae, water turbidity, siltation of the shores and anoxic bottom areas continue to plague the Baltic Sea.

? The effects of climate change are predicted to further accelerate eutrophication of the Baltic Sea. Increasing precipitation and winters with little snow will increase nutrient run-off from land into the Baltic Sea. As the climate warms, the seawater will also warm, promoting algae growth in the sea.

? The abundant growth of small algae, or phytoplankton, in surface waters causes an increase in the oxygen deficiency of the water near the bottom. Dead algae sink to the bottom, and their decomposition consumes oxygen from the bottom. As oxygen depletes, benthic animals disappear.

The donation supports our company's values and is a concrete demonstration of how we are implementing our corporate responsibility theme. By acting responsibly, we can develop our operations on a sustainable basis and create better conditions for future generations.

This Christmas, give a gift to the Baltic Sea - it needs it.

With our donation we wish our customers and partners a Merry Christmas!
