SMS Sender ID (SMS sender ID)
Authorisation and registration of your SMS sender ID
The SMS Sender ID is the name or number shown as the sender of a text message. For businesses, it helps make messages recognizable and trustworthy.
The Traficom regulation that will enter into force in 2026 will change the way in which dispatch codes can be used in Finland.
On this page, we explain what a Shipper Identifier means and what the Traficom regulation means in practice.
What is the Sender ID?
The sender ID is the name or number that appears to the recipient as the sender of the SMS message.
Businesses often use an anonymous sender ID because it makes the message clearly identifiable and builds trust.
Sender ID is:
-
3-11 characters long.
-
Containing letters or numbers.
-
Independent of book printing.
A well-chosen sender ID makes the message easier to recognise and reinforces the company's brand.
Sending messages from 4.5.2026 onwards
After the new regulation enters into force, SMS sender IDs will be managed in two ways:
1. Authorisation (mandatory)
All telephone numbers and named sender IDs used in Finland must be authorised.
-
An SMS provider (such as Quriiri) ensures that an organisation or company has the right to use a Finnish telephone number and/or a nominal (alphanumeric) sender ID for SMS messages to Finnish numbers.
-
SMS provider (like Quriiri) take care of the authorisation for you for telecoms operators.
-
Quriiri to start the authorisation process in March and will also offer convenient tools for managing sender information.
-
A prerequisite for the future delivery of messages.
2. Registration (optional)
A registered consignor's reference number can be protected by registering it with Traficom.
-
The company gets exclusive rights to the sender name
-
No one else can use the same name to send messages in Finland
-
The risk of abuse and scam messages is significantly reduced
-
Your SMS provider must be authorized to send messages using the registered Sender ID
-
If anyone other than an approved party attempts to send messages using your registered sender name, the messages are automatically blocked
Quriiri helps with both the authorisation and the registration process of the sender information.
Why are SMS sender IDs regulated?
Text message scams have become increasingly common in recent years. In scams, criminals can:
-
Send messages on behalf of a well-known company.
-
Uses a named sender ID.
-
Redirect the recipient to a scam page.
Because it has been difficult to identify the sender, it may have been almost impossible for the recipient to distinguish a genuine message from a hoax.
Traficom's new regulation aims to improve trust in SMS communications and prevent the falsification of sender information.

Frequently asked questions about authorization of a sender ID
Can a company have more than one sender record?
Yes. For example, many organisations have a named SMS Sender ID for information messages and a numbered SMS Sender ID for two-way communication.
Can I use any name as a sender?
For each text message sent via Quriiri, you can set either alphanumeric (text, 11 characters) or numeric (15 digits) sender information. Starting from May 4, 2026, sender information must either be licensed or registered. The name must be related to the company's operations.
What is the difference between authorisation and protection?
Authorisation is mandatory and ensures that you are authorised to use the sender ID/number. Quriiri will carry out the authorisation on behalf of the customer. Authentication is voluntary. By registering a consignor number with Traficom, you can protect your consignor number. The protection gives you the exclusive right to a registered nominal consignor's number in Finland.
Does the same SMS Sender ID also work abroad?
The SMS Sender ID registration process varies from country to country. Our experts will help you with both domestic and international communications.
How do I know if my sender ID will still work after 4.5.2026?
At Quriiri, we ensure that all our customers' sender IDs are in order and that messages will be delivered safely even after 4 May 2026.
